How we research and rate
Every rating on Viva Media starts with our own money. We open an account, make a real C$ deposit, play through it and then request a real withdrawal — timing each stage so the payout speeds we publish come from experience, not the operator’s promises. We repeat this for the payment methods Canadians actually use, from Interac e-Transfer to crypto, because a site that’s fast on card can still be slow on e-Transfer.
Alongside the payment testing we verify the licence shown in the footer against the regulator’s own register, read the bonus terms in CAD line by line (wagering, max bet, cashout caps, game weighting) and check how the site handles KYC and responsible-gambling tools. Ratings aren’t set once and forgotten — we re-test regularly, because payout times, terms and ownership change, and a review that’s a year stale can be flat wrong.
We’re also honest about a hard fact of the Canadian market: nearly every casino and crypto site we cover is licensed offshore — most often in Curaçao or Anjouan, and sometimes by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission, a Mohawk Nation regulator, not a Canadian provincial one. That’s a legitimate licence, but it isn’t iGaming Ontario or AGLC, and it doesn’t give you provincial dispute recourse. We never describe an offshore operator as “licensed in Canada,” and if a site’s licence can’t be verified, it doesn’t make our lists.
Meet the team
Daniel Bennet — Payments & Casino Reviewer
Daniel has spent 12 years covering banking and payments in Canadian iGaming. He runs our hands-on testing, putting real money through every deposit and withdrawal method a site offers — Interac e-Transfer, cards, e-wallets and crypto — and timing each cash-out so the payout figures we publish are measured, not guessed. If a withdrawal is slow, reversed or held behind an awkward KYC step, Daniel is the one who finds out first.
Sarah Whitfield — Provincial & Legal Editor
Sarah has 10 years reporting on the Canadian gambling landscape, from iGaming Ontario and AGLC to Loto-Québec and the offshore market. She keeps our legal and provincial content accurate — which regulator covers which province, what’s actually open versus a monopoly, and where the legal ages differ — so readers get the real rules for where they live rather than a one-size-fits-all summary.
Ryan Callaghan — Bonus & Crypto Analyst
Ryan spends his days doing the maths most players skip. Over 8 years he’s audited welcome offers, wagering requirements and crypto on-ramps, working out what a bonus is really worth once you strip out the max-bet rules, cashout caps and game weightings. He’s also our crypto specialist, checking how deposits, conversions and on-chain withdrawals behave in practice before we recommend them.
Our editorial standards
Viva Media is written to be trusted, so we hold our content to clear rules:
- Independence first. Commercial partnerships never dictate a rating. An operator can pay a commission, but it can’t buy a ranking, remove a criticism or reorder a list.
- Factual accuracy on money topics. Gambling is a “your money, your life” (YMYL) subject, so claims about payouts, fees, bonuses and taxes are checked against real testing and primary sources before they’re published.
- Clear sourcing. Where a fact comes from a regulator, an operator’s terms or our own testing, we make that clear rather than asserting it out of thin air.
- We correct errors. When something changes or we get a detail wrong, we fix it and update the page date — we don’t quietly leave stale information up.
- No “offshore = Canadian-licensed” claims. We never imply an offshore operator holds a Canadian provincial licence. The licensing reality is stated plainly on every review.
- Province-accurate legal ages. The minimum gambling age is 19+ in most of Canada, but 18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec — and we reflect that difference instead of publishing a single blanket age.
- Accurate on tax. Recreational gambling winnings are generally tax-free for Canadian players; we describe that correctly and flag the narrow cases where it’s more complicated rather than overstating it.
Responsible gambling commitment
Gambling should stay entertainment, never a way to make money or manage stress. Every review we publish carries responsible-gambling messaging, and every operator we recommend is expected to offer deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion. If the fun stops, please step away and reach out — free, confidential help is available across Canada.
Need to talk to someone? In Ontario, ConnexOntario offers free, confidential support 24/7 at 1-866-531-2600. Canada-wide, visit ResponsibleGambling.ca for tools and provincial help lines. You must be 19+ to gamble in most of Canada (18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec).
Frequently asked questions
How does Viva Media make money?
We earn affiliate commissions when a reader signs up with an operator through one of our links. Those commissions keep the site free to use, but they don’t buy a better ranking — we rate every site the same way whether it pays a high commission, a low one, or none at all. If a highly-paying operator has slow payouts or unfair terms, it ranks lower, full stop.
Do you test the casinos yourselves?
Yes. We open real accounts, make real C$ deposits and request real withdrawals so we can time payouts, check the KYC process and confirm bonuses actually credit as advertised. We don’t rate a site on its marketing — we rate it on what happened when our own money went in and came back out.
Are the casinos you list licensed in Canada?
No — and we never claim otherwise. Almost every casino and crypto site we cover is licensed offshore (Curaçao, Anjouan, or the Mohawk Nation’s Kahnawake Gaming Commission), not by a Canadian provincial regulator like iGaming Ontario or AGLC. We say so plainly on every review so you understand the trade-off before you sign up.
