The law behind Alberta iGaming
Alberta's regulated online market was created by the iGaming Alberta Act, introduced as Bill 48 in 2024. The Act established the framework for an open, competitive market where private operators can offer online casino and sports betting under provincial regulation — rather than the previous situation, where the only legal online option was the government's own site.
This makes Alberta the second Canadian province, after Ontario, to move to an open multi-operator model. This is general information, not legal advice.
Who regulates it: AGLC and the Alberta iGaming Corporation
Alberta uses a two-body structure that closely mirrors Ontario's:
| Body | Role |
|---|---|
| AGLC (Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis) | The regulator — sets standards, registers operators and enforces the rules |
| Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) | The market manager — contracts with private operators to run in the regulated market |
If that sounds familiar, it should: it is the same design as Ontario's AGCO (regulator) and iGaming Ontario (market manager). Alberta looked at what worked next door and built an Ontario-style model.
When the market opened
Alberta's open, multi-operator market opened on or around 13 July 2026. From that point, private operators registered with the AGLC and contracted with the Alberta iGaming Corporation could legally take bets from players in the province — joining the government site that had run on its own for years.
A young market. Because Alberta only opened in mid-2026, the number and mix of registered operators is still settling. Treat any operator count you read as a snapshot in time.
PlayAlberta.ca and the private operators
Alberta did not start from zero. PlayAlberta.ca is the AGLC-run online casino and sports site that has been live since 2020. Under the new framework it does not disappear — it now operates alongside registered private operators, the same way Ontario's PlayOLG runs alongside the private iGaming Ontario market.
So Alberta players now have two legal routes: the government-run PlayAlberta.ca, or any private brand registered to serve the province. You can compare the sites available on our Alberta online casinos page.
Player protections and the legal age
The legal age for online gambling in Alberta is 18 — younger than Ontario's 19. Beyond age and identity verification, the regulated market brings AGLC oversight, dispute processes and responsible-gambling tools. Alberta's responsible-gambling resources include:
- GameSense AB — Alberta's responsible-gambling program, with information and support tools, at gamesenseab.ca.
- Self-exclusion — Alberta players can self-exclude at selfexclusion.ca.
- KYC and geolocation — operators must verify your age and identity, and confirm you are physically in Alberta.
18+ only. Operators must verify your age before you can deposit or play.
How to confirm a site is regulated
Registered operators are listed by the AGLC and the Alberta iGaming Corporation at abigaming.ca. Because the market is new, that list changes over time as more operators register — so the count you see today may differ from next month. If a site accepts Alberta players but is not on the official list, it is operating offshore (for example under Curaçao, Anjouan, Malta or the Kahnawake Gaming Commission) rather than under Alberta's provincial framework, and you would not have provincial dispute recourse.
If gambling stops being fun, support is available through GameSense AB and Alberta's self-exclusion program. Set a deposit limit before you start.
