The rules decide the price: house edge by rule set
Blackjack doesn’t have one house edge — it has a price list, set by the table rules. All figures below assume sound basic strategy at a multi-deck game:
| Rule set | Approx. house edge | Cost per C$1,000 wagered |
|---|---|---|
| 3:2, dealer stands soft 17 (S17), double after split, late surrender | ≈0.35–0.45% | ≈C$4 |
| 3:2, dealer hits soft 17 (H17), no surrender | ≈0.6–0.7% | ≈C$6.50 |
| 3:2, S17, no double after split | ≈0.55% | ≈C$5.50 |
| 6:5 blackjack payout (any other rules) | adds ≈1.39% → ≈1.8%+ | ≈C$18+ |
| Side bets (Perfect Pairs / 21+3) | ≈3–7% | C$30–70 |
How to read a lobby in ten seconds: find the payout line first — 3:2 or walk away. Then prefer S17 over H17, and take double-after-split and surrender where offered. Every rule is printed in the table’s info panel; the casinos in our list all carry 3:2 games.
Basic strategy: the decisions that pay for everything else
You don’t need to memorise a full colour chart to get most of the value. A handful of decisions carry nearly all the edge:
- Always split aces and 8s. Two chances at a strong hand beats one 16 — the worst total in the game.
- Never split 10s or 5s. A made 20 is too good to break; a 10 is a doubling hand, not a splitting one.
- Stand on 12–16 against a dealer 2–6 (hit 12 against 2 or 3). The dealer’s weak upcard does the busting for you.
- Hit 12–16 against a dealer 7 or higher. Painful but correct — standing just waits to lose.
- Double 11 always, and 10 against everything but a dealer 10 or ace. Your best chances to press a winning spot.
- Soft 18 (A-7) is not a “good hand”: double against 3–6, stand against 2, 7 or 8, hit against 9, 10 or ace.
- Never take insurance. See the FAQ — it’s a ~6–8% house-edge side bet wearing a seatbelt costume.
What mistakes cost. Basic strategy keeps the game at ≈0.4%. Typical “gut feel” play — standing on 16 vs 10, skipping doubles, taking even money — runs closer to 2%. On C$25 hands at 60 hands an hour, that’s the difference between C$6/hour and C$30/hour in expected cost.
RNG vs live dealer blackjack
RNG blackjack is software: instant deals, C$0.50–1 minimums, play at your own pace, and a fresh shuffle every hand. It’s the right room for learning basic strategy cheaply — you can comfortably see 200+ hands an hour, or slow down to think.
Live dealer blackjack streams a human dealer with physical cards from studios run by Evolution and Pragmatic Play Live. Standard tables seat seven (from ≈C$5), while Infinite Blackjack deals one communal hand to unlimited players from ≈C$1 — the budget way into live play. Expect 50–60 hands an hour and real table talk. The maths doesn’t care which format you choose; the rules panel does. Check the payout and S17/H17 line on live tables exactly as you would on RNG — both formats are covered in our live casinos guide.
CAD limits at the casinos we list: C$0.50–1 RNG, C$1 Infinite, C$5–10 standard live tables, C$500–10,000+ VIP. High-stakes players should confirm withdrawal limits match their play — see our fast payout casinos page.
Bankroll: surviving the variance you signed up for
A 0.4% edge doesn’t mean smooth sailing — blackjack variance is front-loaded and swingy, with doubles and splits regularly putting 2–4 units on one round. Working rules of thumb:
- Session bankroll = 40–50 bets minimum. C$10 hands want a C$400–500 session roll; shorter rolls turn normal variance into forced quits.
- Keep reserve for doubles and splits. If betting your whole balance-per-hand means you can’t double an 11, your bet is too big.
- Don’t resize bets on emotion. Pressing after losses is Martingale thinking — table limits and finite bankrolls break it (see the maths on our roulette page).
- Bonuses mostly don’t fit blackjack. With 0–10% wagering weight, grinding a bonus through blackjack is usually slower than it’s worth — play clean money instead.
Responsible gambling
Blackjack’s low house edge makes it the most survivable casino game — and that’s precisely its trap: near-even results for long stretches build a feeling of control the maths doesn’t support. The edge never goes to zero, and no streak changes the next hand. Set a session budget and a stop-win as firmly as a stop-loss, and if you ever find yourself betting to “get even,” that’s the signal to close the table. The casinos here are licensed offshore (Curaçao, Anjouan, or the Mohawk Nation’s Kahnawake Gaming Commission — not a Canadian provincial regulator), so use their deposit-limit tools from day one.

Frequently asked questions
What is the house edge in online blackjack?
With basic strategy at a good table — blackjack pays 3:2, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split allowed — the house edge is roughly 0.4%, the lowest of any mainstream casino game. Play the same strategy at a 6:5 table and it jumps past 1.8%. Play by feel instead of basic strategy and you typically hand over another 1.5–2% on top.
Should I ever play 6:5 blackjack?
No. A blackjack paying 6:5 instead of 3:2 returns C$12 instead of C$15 on a C$10 bet, and that single rule change adds about 1.39% to the house edge — more than tripling the cost of a liberal 3:2 game. Online you always have a 3:2 table one click away, so there’s no reason to accept 6:5.
Is live dealer blackjack better than RNG blackjack?
They solve different problems. RNG blackjack lets you play for C$0.50–1 a hand at your own speed, perfect for learning basic strategy. Live dealer blackjack streams a human dealer with real cards — more trust and atmosphere, usually from C$1 (Infinite Blackjack) or C$5 at standard tables. The rules, not the format, decide the house edge; check them either way.
Can you count cards in online blackjack?
Not profitably. RNG games shuffle every hand, so there’s never a deck composition to track. Live dealer games use 8 decks cut around 50% penetration and reshuffle well before the count becomes meaningful. Treat online blackjack as a basic-strategy game: play the chart, keep the edge near 0.4%, and ignore anyone selling a counting system for it.
Should I take insurance in blackjack?
No. Insurance is a side bet that the dealer’s hole card is a ten, and it carries a house edge of roughly 6–8% depending on decks — more than ten times the main game. The same applies to “even money” on your own blackjack against a dealer ace: it’s insurance in disguise. Decline it every time.
What are the minimum and maximum bets at Canadian online blackjack tables?
RNG blackjack starts around C$0.50–1 per hand. Live dealer tables typically run C$1 (Infinite Blackjack), C$5 at standard seven-seat tables, and up to C$10,000+ per hand at VIP and Salon Privé tables. Mid-stakes players are best served between C$10 and C$100, where seat availability is widest.
Are blackjack side bets worth playing?
Mathematically, no. Perfect Pairs carries a house edge around 5–7% and 21+3 around 3–7% depending on the paytable, versus 0.4% on the main hand. They exist because they’re profitable for the casino. If you enjoy them, treat the stake as entertainment money, not strategy — and never let a side bet eat into proper main-bet sizing.
Does blackjack count toward casino bonus wagering?
Rarely in full. Most offshore casinos weight blackjack at 0–10% toward wagering requirements — C$100 in blackjack bets might clear only C$10 of a requirement, and some bonuses exclude table games entirely. If you’re a blackjack-first player, either pick a bonus that explicitly weights tables fairly or skip the bonus and play with a clean balance.
