Alberta’s online casino market just opened — what changed
For years, the only legal online casino in Alberta was PlayAlberta.ca, the AGLC’s own crown site. That changed in July 2026, when the province switched on a regulated multi-operator market — an Ontario-style system where private casino brands can register, get approved and take Alberta players legally, competing head-to-head with the crown site.
In short: PlayAlberta is no longer the only legal option. It now sits alongside a growing roster of registered private operators. Offshore casinos — the ones most Canadians already recognise — are a separate category again, outside the provincial system entirely.
The iGaming Alberta Act (Bill 48)
The new market rests on the iGaming Alberta Act, introduced as Bill 48 in March 2025 and given royal assent that May. It created the legal framework for a competitive online-gambling market and set up the body that manages it. The market went live on Monday, 13 July 2026, with 22 registered sites live on day one; by October 2026 the abigaming.ca register had grown past 40 sites — including bet365, BetMGM, FanDuel, DraftKings, theScore Bet and Jackpot City, many on Alberta-specific domains. The roster is still growing, so check the register for the current list.
AGLC and the Alberta iGaming Corporation
Two bodies run the show. The AGLC (Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis) is the regulator — it sets the rules and licenses operators. The Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) is the market manager: it handles the commercial side and maintains the public register of approved private operators at abigaming.ca. If a casino claims to be legal in Alberta, that directory is where you confirm it.
Is online gambling legal in Alberta?
Yes — and the picture is now clearer than it was a year ago. Since the market opened in mid-2026, Albertans have three legal-to-play categories:
- PlayAlberta — the AGLC crown site, live since 2020.
- AGLC-registered private casinos — new operators approved under the iGaming Alberta Act and listed at abigaming.ca.
- Offshore casinos — sites licensed abroad that accept Alberta players. No law penalises you for using them, but they sit outside AGLC oversight.
The legal age is 18+ across all three — a year younger than Ontario’s 19. The AGLC regulates the market and the Alberta iGaming Corporation manages it. The key thing to absorb: PlayAlberta is now one option among many, not the only door in.
PlayAlberta vs new private casinos vs offshore — an honest comparison
Each route buys you something different. Here’s the straight trade-off:
| PlayAlberta | AGLC-registered private | Offshore (our lineup) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regulator | AGLC (crown) | AGLC + AiGC register | Curaçao / Anjouan / Kahnawake |
| Provincial recourse | Yes | Yes | No — outside AGLC |
| Age | 18+ | 18+ | 18+ |
| Bonuses | Modest | Competitive | Largest |
| Game range | Curated | Broad | Very broad |
| Interac | Yes | Yes | Yes (via processor) |
| Winnings taxed | No | No | No |
If dispute protection and provincial oversight matter most, the two AGLC categories win outright. If you’re chasing the biggest bonuses and the widest game library and you’re comfortable choosing a reputable operator yourself, the offshore route is why most players end up here.
Verify the register. The roster of AGLC-registered private casinos changes as new operators are approved. Always check the current list at abigaming.ca rather than trusting a “licensed in Alberta” badge on a casino’s own site.
AGLC-registered vs offshore casinos — the trade-off
This is the decision that matters most, so it’s worth being blunt about it. An AGLC-registered casino gives you a provincial regulator standing behind your account: if a payout is unfairly withheld or terms are applied wrongly, you have a recognised channel to complain. That protection is real and it’s the main reason to play inside the system.
Offshore casinos — the operators in our lineup — are licensed abroad in Curaçao, Anjouan, or by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission (a Mohawk Nation regulator, not a provincial one). They are not on the AGLC list, so there’s no provincial recourse. What you get in return is bigger welcome bonuses, more slots and live tables, and crypto options the licensed sites rarely match. No Alberta law penalises you for playing on them; the risk you’re accepting is that you’re on your own if a dispute goes badly, which is exactly why choosing a reputable, verifiably-licensed operator matters.
Casino bonuses for Alberta players
Offshore casinos compete hardest on the welcome offer, and Alberta players see the same C$ deals as the rest of Canada. The number to watch isn’t the headline — it’s the wagering requirement, which decides whether a bonus is actually worth claiming.
Here’s a worked example in CAD. Say you deposit C$100 and take a 100% match with 35× wagering:
- You get a C$100 bonus, for a C$200 total balance.
- 35× wagering applies to the bonus (C$100 × 35 = C$3,500 to wager) — or to deposit + bonus at some sites (C$200 × 35 = C$7,000). Read which one applies.
- Slots usually count 100% toward wagering; table games often count 10–20% or nothing.
Rule of thumb. A 100% match at 35× or lower on the bonus only is fair. Watch for max-bet caps (often C$5–8 while wagering), game weighting, and expiry windows — those small-print items sink more bonuses than the multiplier does.
Interac & payment methods
Interac e-Transfer is the top payment method for Albertans — it’s the rail nearly every Canadian bank uses to send money by email, and it works on both licensed and offshore casinos. Deposits are near-instant, withdrawals come back bank-to-bank without you sharing card details, and the minimum is usually C$10.
| Method | Deposit speed | Withdrawal time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interac e-Transfer | Instant | 12–24 hours | Most popular; first payout slower due to KYC |
| Crypto (BTC/USDT) | Instant | Under 1 hour | Fastest, offshore only — see our crypto casinos guide |
| e-wallets (MuchBetter, Skrill) | Instant | 0–24 hours | Fast, but some are bonus-excluded |
| Card / bank transfer | Instant | 1–5 business days | Slowest option |
On offshore sites, Interac is routed through a licensed Canadian processor (often Gigadat) because the operator can’t connect to Interac directly — but to you it behaves like a normal e-Transfer. For the full breakdown, see our Interac casinos guide.
Are gambling winnings taxed in Alberta?
No. For recreational players, casino winnings are tax-free in Alberta, the same as everywhere in Canada. The Canada Revenue Agency treats gambling wins from games of chance as a windfall, not income — so a jackpot on a slot or a good night at the tables doesn’t go on your tax return.
The narrow exception is someone who gambles as an established profession, running it like a business — a rare situation that doesn’t apply to ordinary players. If that could be you, get advice from a tax professional. For the vast majority, the rule is simple: what you win, you keep.
Responsible gambling in Alberta
Online casino games are entertainment, not a way to make money, and the odds always favour the house over time. Set a deposit limit before you play, treat losses as the cost of the entertainment, and never chase them. You must be 18 or older to gamble in Alberta.

Frequently asked questions
Is online gambling legal in Alberta?
Yes. Alberta’s regulated online market opened in mid-2026 under the iGaming Alberta Act, run by the AGLC with the Alberta iGaming Corporation as market manager. Offshore sites also accept Alberta players, but they sit outside that framework — there’s no law penalising you for playing on them, and no AGLC recourse if something goes wrong.
What’s the legal gambling age in Alberta?
18+. That’s a year younger than Ontario, where you must be 19. It applies to PlayAlberta, the new AGLC-registered private casinos and any offshore site.
Is PlayAlberta the only legal casino in Alberta?
Not any more. PlayAlberta (the AGLC crown site, live since 2020) used to be the only legal option, but since July 2026 it runs alongside AGLC-registered private casinos in the open market.
Are casino winnings taxed in Alberta?
No. For recreational players, gambling winnings are tax-free in Alberta — as they are across Canada. You don’t report casino wins as income unless gambling is your established profession.
Can I use Interac at Alberta casinos?
Yes. Interac e-Transfer is the most popular way Albertans move money in and out of an online casino, on both licensed and offshore sites. Deposits are near-instant and withdrawals usually clear within a day.
Which casinos are licensed in Alberta?
AGLC-registered operators are listed in the Alberta iGaming Corporation directory at abigaming.ca. Offshore casinos — including the ones in our lineup — are not on that list. The register is the only authoritative source, and the roster changes, so check abigaming.ca for the current names.
Are offshore casinos legal for Alberta players?
No law penalises Albertans for playing at offshore casinos, but they operate outside AGLC oversight, so you have no provincial recourse in a dispute. If you play offshore, stick to reputable operators with a verifiable licence.
Where can I get gambling help in Alberta?
GameSense AB offers free, confidential support at gamesenseab.ca, and Alberta’s self-exclusion programme is at selfexclusion.ca. Since the July 2026 launch, one self-exclusion registration covers every AGLC-registered online site plus land-based casinos — broader than Ontario’s. Note it does not extend to offshore sites, where you’d use the operator’s own tools. Nationally, ConnexOntario runs a 24/7 helpline at 1-866-531-2600.
